Shipyard Workshops

CBMM offers a number of hands-on programs in the Shipyard throughout the year through its Apprentice for a Day Program. These include demonstrations, workshops, intensives with visiting master craftsmen, on-the-water experiences, and customizable programming.

Summer Camp

Explore the magic of the Chesapeake Bay’s people, animals, traditions, and environment! Weekly camp offerings rotate between age groups, with sessions for children from ages 4–15. Each session is limited to a maximum of 12 children, with an emphasis on creating a fun, hands-on learning environment that includes on-the water and environmental activities, stories, games, crafts, and other creative projects.

Scholarships available for qualifying students. To inquire, email registration@cbmm.org.

Sea Squirts: Open to children ages 4–6. Camp operates from 9am–noon. $165 per week.

 

Terrapins: Open to children who are entering grades 1–3. Camp operates from 9am–4pm, Monday–Friday. $375 per week.

 

Summer Workshop: Camp weeks are open to either children entering grades 4-6 or children entering grades 6-9. Camp operates from 9am–4pm, Monday–Friday. $375 per week. Time will be spent in the workshop and out on the water. 

 

Museum Masters: Alternating camp weeks are open to children entering grades 4-6. Camp operates from 9am–4pm, Monday–Friday. $375 per week. 

 

MEMBER PRESALE & DISCOUNT: Camp sessions will be available for presale to CBMM members starting on Jan. 2, at 12AM via Campwise. Payment must then be completed via Altru (this website) to confirm your registration.. To receive your member discount, please "Sign In" to your Altru account by clicking on the top right hand side of this web page. Select the number of weeks you have registered for in Campwise to access the presale and receive your member discount. *Please note that there is a reduced rate for camp during the July 4th week.

Payment Policy:

Payment for camp weeks must be completed within 10 days of registration in Campwise. If payment is not completed within this time frame, your registration may be canceled and the spot made available to other registrants. If you are in need of scholarship support or an alternate payment schedule, please email registration@cbmm.org with your request.

Cancellation and Refund Policy:

Due to the popularity of summer camp programs and our frequency of wait lists, refunds for cancellations will be provided according to the following schedule: 

  • All camp registrations are subject to a $25.00 non-refundable deposit.
  • If a cancellation request is received before May 1st, a 100% refund will be provided, minus the non-refundable $25.00 deposit. 
  • If a cancellation request is received after May 1st but more than 30 days prior to the start of the program, a 50% refund will be provided, minus the non-refundable $25.00 deposit. 
  • If a cancellation request is received within 30 days of the start of the program, no refund will be provided. 

Transfers between camp weeks can be made up to one week before the program start date, provided that space is available. In cases of refunds for medical exclusions, please contact registration@cbmm.org. If CBMM cancels any camp program all registration fees will be refunded.

Public Guided Tours

GUIDED TOURS: These interactive hour-long tours explore require a moderate amount of walking across uneven surfaces including gravel. Tours offered include:
  • Navigating the Chesapeake: Discover the incredible history and distinctive culture of the Chesapeake Bay, exploring the connections between the environment and people over time. This tour requires walking up and down several flights of stairs. 
  • Oystering on the Chesapeake: Explore the history of the greatest oyster factory on Earth—the Chesapeake Bay—and how the oyster has shaped the culture, industry, and environment.
  • Blue Crabs Bay to Table: Following the blue crab on its journey from the brackish Bay to our picnic tables.
  • Catch of the Day: Learn what it means to “follow the water” in every season on the Chesapeake, learning about seasonal harvests such as crabs, oysters, and waterfowl. 
  • Seeking Freedom: Uncover the stories of freedom seekers in the Chesapeake. Living in proximity to the Chesapeake’s marshes, creeks, and rivers, enslaved people used their access and knowledge to self-emancipate.
  • Lighthouses of the Chesapeake: Tour the historic 1879 Hooper Strait Lighthouse and explore the adventurous, exciting, and sometimes dangerous life of a lighthouse keeper. This tour requires walking up and down several flights of stairs. 
  • Boats of the Bay: Log Bottom Boats: Evolving from indigenous dugout canoe traditions, log-bottom construction  resulted in rugged, utilitarian vessels that were completely unique to the Chesapeake. 
  • Boats of the Bay: Racing Boats: From sailing log canoes and skipjack races to one-design classes and hydroplanes, explore some of the racing traditions that keep the spirit of competition alive in the Chesapeake. 
  • Boats of the Bay: Working Boats: From small skiffs to large skipjacks, this tour will explore working boats in CBMM’s collection to uncover the stories of the people who worked aboard.
